How does smoking damage your Heart?

Smoking increases the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases, which includes coronary heart disease and stroke.
  • Smoking damages the lining of your arteries, leading to a build up of fatty material (atheroma) which narrows the artery. This can cause angina, a heart attack or a stroke.
  • The carbon monoxide in tobacco smoke reduces the amount of oxygen in your blood. This means your heart has to pump harder to supply the body with the oxygen it needs.
  • The nicotine in cigarettes stimulates your body to produce adrenaline, which makes your heart beat faster and raises your blood pressure, making your heart work harder.
  • Your blood is more likely to clot, which increases your risk of having a heart attack or stroke.  Take a look at our cardiovascular disease page to find out more about blood clots and the damage they can do to your body.

Women - Heart Diseases

There is a common misconception that only men are susceptible to the risk of heart disease, but they are all sadly mistaken. In fact it is also the #1 cause of death in women. In fact, since 1984, more women than men have died each year from heart disease.

Updates on Cardio-oncology

Cardio-oncology is the intersection of heart conditions in patients who have been treated for cancer. New insights into how cancer therapies impact cardiovascular homeostasis and long-term effects on cancer survivors. In view of trends, as well as the cardiovascular toxicity potential of radiation and chemotherapy, cancer patients are exposed to cardiovascular morbidity and mortality more than ever before. Anticancer therapies can cause significant injury to the vasculature, resulting in angina, acute coronary syndromes (ACS), stroke, critical limb ischemia, arrhythmias, and heart failure (HF), independently from the direct myocardial or pericardial damage that might occur.
